Welcome to Year 4!

Making Grendel puppets in English really helped us explore ways to describe how different characters move.
Spring Term
In the Spring Term, we focus on Geography as our driving subject in our topic, Misty Mountain, Winding River. We also study Art, Science and DT topics alongside this.
Maths moves on in the Spring term to look at Fractions and Area and Perimeter as well as recapping Multiplication and Division to ensure children are secure in their formal methods of calculation. Our Times Tables Number Sense programme continues daily and children will also be using iPads regularly to practice their speed and fluency on Times Table Rock Stars.
Writing in the Spring Term is for a range of purposes: narratives to entertain, poetry and diaries to inform. Guided Reading sessions will focus on developing vocabulary, retrieval and inference skills through the study of books such as Tuck Everlasting and Hike.

Autumn Term
During the Autumn term, our driving project is Invasion. We study the period of history after the Romans leave Britain until the Battle of Hastings in 1066. We also study a wide range of smaller topics in Science, Geography, Art and Design Technology.
Maths in the Autumn term focuses on developing children's understanding of place value with numbers up to 10,000 and the four operations. We also practice our times tables daily using our Number Sense programme.
Our English lessons are often linked to our projects and this term we write character descriptions based on the monsters found in Michael Morpurgo's Beowulf - inspired by the Norse legend. We also create explanation texts about the healthy snacks we make in DT.
During this term, we take our first trip of the year, to Butser Ancient Farm. Here we explore the daily life of a Viking and get hands on with artefacts and crafts.

Summer Term
The Summer Term, sees us return to History as our driving subject with the topic Ancient Civilisations. Supporting this we have smaller topics in Science, DT and Art.
This topic ends with an opportunity for parents to come into school and visit our very own museum designed and created by the students to exhibit their learning over the term.
Maths in the Summer Term begins with a focus on Times Tables and we complete the Multiplication Tables Check. We then move on to studying decimals, time, shape and position.
English in the summer term focuses on writing to persuade and inform as well as giving the children an opportunity to write a longer narrative in the form of a story in the second half of the term.
During this term we also having our overnight camping trip to Earleywood Campsite where the children learn how to pitch tents, cook on a campfire and participate in a range of adventure activities.
