Global Community

Gambia Link

At HWPS, we have made a link with The Soma New Lower Basic School in The Gambia.

We hope this will be a long lasting project in which we will be able to learn from and about one another.  It is our intention to develop our link through cross curricular lessons, themed days, joint projects, teacher exchanges and fundraising.

Through this link we hope that our children will gain a deep understanding of life for children living in Africa and a sense that although we look different, have different customs and beliefs and live in very different contexts, we nevertheless share a common humanity.

It is our aspiration that such experiences will enable our children to become active global citizens. We hope that, in time, they will be inspired to visit The Gambia or to become involved in projects supporting communities in other areas of the developing world.

During the Covid 19 pandemic, we have raised over £200 for the emergency rice appeal at Kaira Konko in Soma,  The Gambia.

At HWPS, we made paper mache figures of children playing. The children at the Soma New Lower Basic School did the same project. We all had great fun!

Look what we have done!

The roof at the Soma New Lower Basic School has been mended and we have received the following message from the school:

It's with our profound gratitude and honour that we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the administration, staff and students of Harmans Water primary School for this valuable work that you have rendered to our school. This work will go a long way in helping students to attend to their educational programs without any difficulty. I wish you could have seen joy and happiness on the faces of students after resuming their classrooms. Kids were indeed very happy and they appreciate it so much.

"We will not run to other classes again during the rainy season." from a student, she further said they wish they could do the same for Harmans Water Primary.

Your great gesture is really appreciated.

The broken roof at the Soma New Lower Basic School has been removed! Pictures of the new roof will follow when it has been completed.

Following the staff visit to the New Lower Basic school at half term, Mrs Wyld was aked by the British High Commissioner to teach the scout band the UK and Gambian national anthems ready for the state visit of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. The scouts had ony been playing their instruments for three months and gave a remarkable performance.

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of the HWPS community, we have raised enough money to fix the roof at our link school in The Gambia!

When we told the Headmaster, Mr Colley, he was very happy and extremely relieved that the nursery children would not have to work in a classroom in such poor condition for much longer. Mrs Tumelty captured the moment that we told him...

The town of Soma is in the Lower River Region of The Gambia. It lies on an important crossroads where the main east-west road in the country crosses the Trans-Gambia Highway.
