Autumn Term
Movers and Shakers
In Autumn term we learn about movers and shakers such as Neil Armstrong and Malala Yousafzai. We learn about their lives and what makes them significant. In Science we are learning about different habitats and what animals need to survive.
We consolidate our letter knowledge using the Read Write Inc scheme, which is adapted to individuals using 1:1 tutor methods. We look at some lovely repetitive books and rhymes and use these as a basis for our language learning. We focus on creating and composing sentences together and work on our fine motor skills.
In social skills we develop a sense of ourselves, how we look and our feelings. We learn about the zones of regulation and how they feel and then put ourselves in a zone of regulation every day. We use music and circle time as a way to learn social skills, such as sharing and waiting our turn. We will be feeling the beat and joining in with our percussion instruments to recreate a pattern and listen carefully.
Spring Term
Bright Lights, Big City
Our topic for this term is called Bright Lights Big city. This project teaches children about the physical and human characteristics of the United Kingdom, including London.
The children enjoy looking at different maps and aerial images, using directions, this is complimented by simple coding in our ICT sessions.
They also enjoy studying the weather and seasons in this topic looking at the effects of our weather and keeping a record of how the weather changes.
In our art the children will be making repeated patterns through printing.
Our DT involves making a moving vehicle using wheels, axles and chassis.
Summer Term
The Coastline
In the Summer Term our main topic is 'The Coastline' and we will be learning about the Human and physical features that brings. Our understanding will be enhanced through a visit to Southsea Beach, where we will also take inspiration for our own 3D beach hut designs and models.
In English, we will study the wordless picture book Flotsam, creating character descriptions of the creatures inside. We will write lists and simple sentences and write a simple report on our trip.
In social skills we will be looking at how we can ask for things we want and say no if we need to. We will practise turn taking and waiting if we need to and work on individual targets.
