PE and Games
We teach the PE National Curriculum through the Get Set 4 PE Scheme. This PE Curriculum has been mapped out to provide children with a wide range of sports, including, dance, gymnastics, Athletics, cricket, Tag Rugby, Netball and they are all underpinned by the Fundamental movement skills. The children also benefit from a half term of swimming every year from years 1-6. There is a clear progression of knowledge and skill development from Nursery through to year 6 and we aim to revisit sports and key skills to support the children in imbedding this knowledge.
We also attend multiple Bracknell Forest sports events and festivals across the year, providing the children with an opportunity to represent our school. We aim to take every child on at least one sport event by the time they leave us in year 6. We also offer a variety of after-school sports clubs that are internally run.
EYFS
The children in Nursery and Reception are exposed to a rich outdoor environment to support them to develop their gross motor skills. They have access to climbing frames, equipment (like skipping ropes, balls, bats etc) and larger obstacles where they develop the skills to maneuverer and move around these. In Reception they begin formal PE where they begin by having an introduction to PE and they learn different ways to move their bodies and how to be safe in PE. They also learn the 3 basic gymnastic shapes (Stretch, Star and Tuck), have their first experiences using PE apparatus, as well as learning first ball skills like stopping, moving and handling balls.
Both Nursery and Reception take part in Sports Day which is a much-loved event.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1 children continue to develop their Fundamental movement skills beginning each year with a unit on this as these movement skills are the building blocks to many sports and provides children with the confidence in their ability.
Children have a variety of skills-based units, for example, sending and receiving, target games and invasion games. The aim is to make PE fun and game based whilst also developing key sports skills that will use in KS2 when they begin to look at individual sports.
The children continue to develop their Gymnastics knowledge and build on from the 3 basic shapes and also learn the straddle and pike shapes. Children also begin to learn how to balance, how to roll and how to change direction using these shapes.
Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2 the children begin to move on from skill-based units and they begin to look at individual sports and how they can use their different skills in defence and attacking positions of games. We try to give the children an opportunity to revisit each sport across Key Stage 2 to consolidate and build on their knowledge of the game.
In Gymnastics the children now being to link shapes together to make sequences, use counter balancing and looking at entry, exit and linking movement skills.
In Key Stage 2 the children use the sports centre for their sports day and they get to experience running on a running track and using a long jump pit. This event is a much loved event across the whole school community.
